Headed to Jamaica!

And boooy do I need it! Work is still crazy & I'm hoping it calms down soon. But in the mean time, I'll be lounging here for the next four days:

It's a {all-inclusive, woo} girls trip with some of my friends & it's the longest I have ever been away from the munchkin. Here's hoping I make it without her. I love her soooo much & hate to miss that many days with her, but she'll be in good hands with my sister & the hubbs. Hope everyone has a great week...'till next time!

::knock, knock:: Is this thing on?

SORRY guys! I have totally been the worst blogger ever in the last month or so. Work is still crazy, but my rotational assignment is winding down, so hopefully life will be calming down within about a month. I promise, promise, promise to pick back up with What I Wanna Buy Wednesdays, my monthly munchkin updates, etc. I also must post about my DIY spring/summer wreath tutorial & a sort of recap of the last month {since, you know, I was MIA for the last month}. I'm gonna get started back up very very soon, like in the next day or so!

Also, in my defense, one super cute little munchkin has been taking up all my free time...see exhibit #1:

{whatchu talkin' bout mama?}

<------- Oh yeah & PS - notice my brand spankin' **new** "featured on" badge over there?! I was totally honored to have little munchkin's nursery featured on the Baby Lifestyles, which is a really awesome all things baby website/blog! Check me out here & while you're at it, browse around the site - there are all kinds of nursery, gift & party ideas & more!!

 {Ahhhhhhh, still my fave room in the house!}

Okay, that's all for now, I'll be back soon - {girl} scout's honor! 'Till next time. :)

Learning to take better photos (cute baby pics inside)

I think I briefly mentioned this before, but my wonderful hubby got me an awesome digital SLR camera for Christmas. Check out this baby:
 (cue hallelujah music)

I LOVE it! But I realized - it's been SO long since I used a complex camera like this (we used to use similar, non-digital versions of these for yearbook & newspaper in high school...yep, I was in both - big dork, huh?!) that I have no clue about the in's & out's of this thing. And I'd hate to have my husband spend sooooo much money on this & let it go to waste by shooting in auto mode all the time. Although don't get me wrong, this thing takes AWESOME pics even in the auto modes. See exhibits A-C:

<3

I guess you can see who my favorite subject is? Hehehe. She's so cute. Okay, okay..back on track. :)

So what I'm getting at is, one of my goals for this year is to learn how to really take great photos with my new lover camera. So I asked some of my online mama friends what they did to learn how to really get the best use out of their SLR cameras & a several of them said they signed up for classes, which I'd love to do at some point, but is not an option right now because of time/schedule constraints. A couple of them sent me links to online courses & photographers blogs that have tips for moms, which is more up my alley right now. After looking over everything, I decided to go with this 12 weeks to better photography course offered by two peas in a bucket. And the best part about this course - it's free! My favorite price. :) And I'm starting now. The plan is to post an update every weekend with my progress each week & recap what I learned/post some photos that I'll take using my newly acquired photo skills!

So follow along & maybe even take the course with me if you want to learn how to take better photos too. I'm excited...learning new stuff is always fun for me. I like a challenge. 'Till next time!

First week back...

It went better than expected. I didn't cry. Not once the whole week! I am proud of myself, lol. I felt like I would cry on Monday, but I didn't. I got up a little before 5am - Amaya was still asleep, so I quickly got dressed, brushed my teeth, etc. & waited for my sister to arrive at our house. She got here a little before 6am & then Amaya started waking up. I told my sister to try patting her back & sometimes she'd fall back asleep. Then I headed out to catch my train to work. She texted me a bit later to tell me that she woke up shortly after I left. That early wake up was followed by a string of very short naps for the day, so by the time I got home, my little beh-be was sooo sleepy. She was definitely fussy, but fell asleep within about 45 min. (it normally takes FOREVER to get her to sleep when she's overtired) & slept for...wait for it...NINE hours straight. Yes, you read that right NINE!!! She woke up at 3:30am, had a bottle & went back down until I think 8am the next morning! Wowza. That was the longest stretch of sleep she has ever had.

The hubbs & I alternated watching her while we teleworked on Tuesday & Wednesday, which will not be a regular occurrence - just happened this week since I ended up going back to work a week early (long story) & my sister was not available the full week. She had pretty long morning naps both days, followed by short to semi-short naps (no longer than an hour) throughout the rest of each day & both days she was EXTREMELY fussy by 4:30pm/5pm. I'm talking full on straightening her legs, crying for 3 hours on & off until she finally went down-type fussy. Poor baby. :(

But today..ahh today...was such a wonderful marvelous great day! It was my sister's second day with her (she has a 3 year old as well). First, she slept until 7am, which is waaay better than the 6am wake up on Monday. An hour doesn't seem like much of a difference, but it is. My sister said she woke up happy, she fed her & got her dressed, then sent me these adorable pics of Baby AJ in her outfit for the day (she promises to send me daily pics of my cutie - awesome :):

 {apologize for the quality - they are cell phone pics}

Then, she took about an hour long nap in the morning, my sister took my nephew to his Gymboree class & wore Baby AJ in this carrier. She said that Amaya LOVED it at Gymboree & had a blast looking around at everything & all the kids! Then, she took another short nap on the way home from Gymboree, got home & had a bottle, then went down at 3pm & slept until 7pm!! I know, I know...her naps shouldn't be more than 3 hours, but believe me...my child needs at least 1 pretty long nap. I wasn't gonna let it go past 7pm anyways, but she woke up on her own. So, since she was not overtired after that nap (but she was hungry), I got to spend some non-fussy quality time with my baby after she had a pretty big bottle {& after her daddy stole some quality time with his angel}, then we gave her a bath & went back downstairs in the living room to hang out until she started acting sleepy again, which was shortly after we sat down! So I took her up to her room, rocked her in her rocking chair & fed her another small bottle {trying the before bedtime cluster feed thing out to see if it helps her sleep longer}, sang her a lullaby & she was out after about 10 more minutes of rocking. I try to put her down in her crib before she falls asleep, but she was out so quickly tonight, that it didn't quite happen, but she was still sucking her paci when I put her down, so she wasn't completely asleep. They say it teaches them to self-soothe to get to sleep the rest of the way. And now, my baby girl is fast asleep {and hopefully staying that way for at least the next 6+ hours until her middle of the night feed} & it was without the usual 2-3 hour screamfest. Holler. My sister works miracles & it's great because I know she loves Amaya & takes excellent care of her. All of that = amazing peace of mind for mama! And I'm back at work, doing a job that I like & some me time away from the house & baby...just enough to preserve my sanity. It is definitely going to be exhausting, but I'll get used to it. I think we are gonna be alright if we keep having more days like today! 'Till next time!

PS - post baby weight loss, info on the hubbs 30th birthday & more on our planned 2011 home projects coming soon!

Annnd now...

I'm starting to feel sick to my stomach with anxiety over leaving her while I go in to the office. Luckily, I'm only in the office 3 days a week - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday. I telework or I am off the other days (every other Friday I'm off because I work 9 hour days), but this week, I think I'll have to work Monday-Wednesday in the office due to a mandatory meeting that I have to be present for on Wednesday. And when I'm in the office, I'm gone for nearly the whole day - about 12 hours - because my job is sorta far away from my house. Eeek. Three straight days without my little munchkin. Will she miss me? Probably not. It'll probably be more me missing her. As long as her basic needs are met, which I'm sure will be with my sister, then she will be fine. I hear the first week is the toughest & at least I'm off this Friday. It's just that I'm scared & nervous & anxious & feeling guilty & everythingelsebadyoucanthinkof. I know there are thousands of working moms out there, but right now I feel like I'm the only one. Why do I feel like this when earlier in the week {as recent as yesterday}, I was excited to be back around adults for at least some of the week? I guess it's because the eve is upon me. I'll check in & let you guys know how it goes tomorrow. Please pray, send good wishes, etc. that I get through this week without becoming a total basket case. I'll probably call my sister about 15,678 times. ::winks:: 'Till next time.

Is it horrible...

That on Monday I go back to work & I'm actually really excited to not be around the baby 24/7? I mean, don't get me wrong, I love her to death & love spending time with her, but motherhood has been much rougher on me than I ever expected. I wrote once right before she was born that I was not scared of giving birth, but I was a little scared of raising a child, being completely responsible for another human being's well being, happiness, learning, everything. I wrote that although I have experience with babies & children, that I thought it would be much different with my own child - kinda like I think I know, but I have no idea. Well, I was absolutely right. And it's been rough on me. I guess I need to really come to terms with the fact that my life has forever been changed. I can't pick up & do what I want, when I want to. If I need to run an errand, go to the doctor, have lunch or a drink with a friend, etc. I have to pre-arrange it with my husband, or if he's not home, then I have to just pray that the time my appointments are fit into her sleeping/eating schedule. I feel like I knew all of this before I had a baby, but the reality doesn't hit you until the baby is here & you face these things.

And my hubby & I rarely have a spare moment alone to just re-group & re-connect with each other. I love seeing him with our daughter, but I miss how much alone time we used to have with each other. I feel like our relationship has lost some of it's intimacy & it makes me sad. I think I took so much for granted & I am just now starting to realize how carefree our lives were. I know we will get back on track once she's a little older, but I just hate that I have to wait for that. Again, don't take this to say that I am upset we had a baby - we both love her so much, but I am just expressing how having her has been such a huge, life-changing experience for me. I always feel like I am second-guessing the decisions I make as a mom - from creating a schedule for her, to sleep training, etc. I have come to realize though, that I need to stop dwelling on what worked for my friends & family members' kids & focus on what will work for my child & our lifestyle. And stick to it. And don't cave in when the going gets tough...because it does & will.

She got her first cold this past Monday & I think that added to my stress level. When infants are sick, they are so pitiful & fussy. And she could hardly breath because of all the mucous in her nose & throat/cough, so it made it tough for her to sleep. Thankfully, she's getting better...wooo! And I am SO happy because I hate seeing her uncomfortable. Fortunately, my older sister will be nanny'ing {I realize that is not a word, lol} for us, so my anxiety about leaving Baby AJ while I go to work is much less than it would be if I were leaving her at a center or home-based daycare. Thank God that my sister is able to do this for us - she is such a blessing & Amaya is so lucky because her auntie LOVES her! She has a toddler, so I am a little nervous about whether she'll be able to keep Amaya on the EASY {Eat, Activity, Sleep, You Time} schedule that I have tried to get her on. More on that lata.

Anyways, sorry for such a long, serious post, but I just thought I'd be real for a second. I feel like no one really talks much about the hard part of parenting. Yes, there is a lot of joy & happiness, but it's also a HUGE period of adjustment to your new life & reality. I know & have faith that it'll get easier, or at least I'll become more accustomed to it, & I will adjust to my new "normal". Now that I will be back at work, I'll be able to blog more often & bring you guys more updates about our 2011 home projects & of course, little Amaya!  'Till next time...

So this is what happens when you make plans...my birth story

I had so many plans. Plans to have final lunch dates with girlfriends & co-workers. Plans to do some final baby shopping & some final tidying up around the house. Plans to enjoy the final few weeks of my pregnancy with my hubby. Plans to attend a close friend's bachlorette party on October 16th (they went on a wine tour earlier in the day & were gonna do pizza & movies at the bride's house, so I was gonna attend that part). We also had a final baby shower being thrown for us by the hubb's co-workers on October 21st. And I even volunteered to act as team leader for my boss who is going out of town for the last couple of weeks in October...we had just talked about it on the morning of Wednesday, October 13th & he asked if I was sure since the time I was volunteering to act on his behalf was only literally days from my due date. I was SO sure I told him..."there's no way Amaya is coming before the end of October," I said. And that very same night my water broke & the next day, our little girl arrived!

Now that I've been a mommy for 2 weeks now & things are starting to settle down just a little bit, I decided to finally sit down & write out my full birth story. This is gonna be LONG & very detailed {reader discretion is advised} because I want to have this documented for me to be able to come back & read later on, so bear with me.

I went to work on October 13th & everything seemed normal enough. I was 36 weeks & 4 days pregnant...the hubbs & I had started carpooling so just in case I went into labor at work, then my husband would be able to pick me up & drive me to our hospital. But that day, I rode the metro (the DC Metro Area's public transit rail - my job subsidizes the cost of it) because Dennis stayed home to telework (I switched my telework day that week due to a mandatory meeting). Now if you aren't from the DC Metro Area or other highly populated city, then it's important for me to note that everyone walks FAST to get on & off the trains & up & down the escalators, etc. So I got a decent amount of exercise in that day because I power walked in the morning & afternoon while commuting...not sure if that is important to my story or not, just my hypothesis, LOL. Anywho, I had a normal day at work, no real contractions to speak of. I had been having a couple of Braxton Hicks contractions the weekend before & that day as well. Not enough to be alarmed or call the doctor or anything, maybe 3-4 a day since the previous Saturday. I got home at my normal time - around 6pm & changed into more comfortable clothes. It was a really nice evening, so we planned to grill some pork chops that night. The hubbs was out on the deck getting the grill ready & I was relaxing on the couch in my normal spot. :) Then, as I was watching TV, waiting to get started cooking, I felt this pop & gush around 6:45pm'ish. And I immediately stood up to get off the couch. I hadn't sneezed or coughed or anything, but I was in denial that my water had broke, so I just figured I lost control of my bladder randomly for some odd reason. Well, that was NOT the case at all, lol.

I went to our powder room to try & pee & just see if that's what was going on. I said to Dennis, "The weirdest thing just happened to me..." He said, "What?" And I said, "I think my water just broke." Then he said, "Stop playing!!?!" So I told him I wasn't kidding & I made him come in the bathroom to check where the "water" was coming from (I had peed & then when I was done the gushing had not stopped - it would gush then stop, then gush again & I could feel that it wasn't coming from the same place pee comes from, haha). He checked & said, "Ummm, yeah that's definitely not pee!" So then he started getting excited & frantic at the same time, saying let's go to the hospital...NOW! I told him to calm down & then I remembered what my OB said at my 36 week appointment - she said if 1 of 3 things happened, then to call the Dr.'s office before heading to the hospital. One of those 3 things was my water breaking, so I had him call my OB instead while I cleaned up in the bathroom & then I put on a heavy pad & went upstairs to finish packing my bag for the hospital. I had never finished doing it! I planned to finish the following weekend, but clearly that was too late! It was after office hours, so we left a voice mail for my Dr. & finished throwing stuff in my bag while waiting on the Dr. to call back. The baby's bag was packed already at least. :)  It's important to note here for all you other 1st time moms, I had NEVER lost my mucus plug or had a bloody show that I read so much about while pregnant.  My water just broke while I was resting on the couch with no warning. I did notice a light amount of blood on my pad that I changed once more before heading to the hospital, but otherwise, I didn't have any of the other labor warning signs. When my Dr. called back, she asked me a bunch of questions to try & ascertain if my water had broken & she agreed that it probably had, so she told me to come to the hospital to get checked out - not to rush because it was not an emergency since we had 24 hours to deliver the baby after my water broke to prevent infection.  So the hubbs walked the dog & I put some food down for him. We got everything together, the hubbs packed up my SUV & we headed out. I wish I had eaten something because once I got to the hospital, they didn't allow me to eat ANYTHING but ice chips. And I was SO hungry after a while.

On the way to the hospital I called my sister, dad, mom, the hubbs called his mom & I texted a few close friends to let them know what was going on. I'll never forget that car ride. I think I was still in denial that it was happening right then. The hubbs & I talked about how we felt about the baby coming so soon - excited, nervous, scared, happy...just a flood of a lot of emotions. So we got to the hospital & went up to labor & delivery (L&D) & they were ready for me because my Dr. had already told them I'd be coming in. They put me in a triage room (which was empty) to check me in, ask me some questions & I think the original plan was to do a test to ensure my water had, in fact, broken, but all the nurse checking me in did was take one look & she knew that it had. I wasn't in triage for long - they moved me to my labor, delivery & recovery (LDR) room shortly after (around 8:30pm), which was big & spacious. My Dr. came in shortly after to check in on me & we discussed my wishes during the birth. I told her I wanted an epidural, but not until I was at least 4-5 cm dilated. Since my water had broken, we had 24 hours to deliver the baby to avoid infection.  She checked my cervix & I was only 1 cm dialated, and since I wasn't really having any good contractions on my own, she said she wanted to give me a low dose of pitocin to see if it would help me progress. Here I am right after getting into my LDR room, still doing good - just nervously excited:

So anywho - the pitocin started working & it was rough - I mean ROUGH! Like the worst pain I ever remember feeling in my life. I was literally loosing my effing MIND. When I was about 2-3 cm dilated, I asked for a narcotic pain killer to help me manage the pain for a while longer before asking for the epidural. I was scared the epidural would slow down my labor, so I tried to wait it out. The pain killer they gave me in my IV (forgot the name) helped for like a minute, lol. It made me feel nice...between contractions, which were coming about every 5 minutes or so at this point, so I took little cat naps between them. The pain killer didn't work for long though. My contractions started to get more & more painful & closer together. I'm talking nobody touch me, grabbing on the bed rails, shaking all over, moaning in agony pain. When my Dr. came to check me again, I was close to 4 cm dilated & she asked if she could talk me into the epidural now & I said YES PLEASE. I had previously told the hubbs not to let me get a epidural until I was at least 4-5 cm, so he innocently reminded me about that & I told him I literally didn't care what I said before, I needed this epidural! So the Dr. ordered it & it took the anesthesiologist an hour & a half to get to me. Apparently it was a really busy night for births, but sheesh I thought I was gonna loose my mind waiting on him! I was having contractions so closely together - about 1.5-2 minutes apart, so they kept coming while the anesthesiologist was placing the epi. I had to stay SO still, which was hard with all the pain I was in. Anywho, I got my epi around 4am & could only feel it in my right side at first & I thought I was gonna be one of those people you read about that still feel labor in one side after getting the epi. But my nurse told me to lay on my left side for a little while & see if that helped...it did, thank goodness. :)

It took about 10-15 minutes for the full effect of the epi to kick in, then I was all good. Numb from the waist down, so I didn't feel much by way of contractions after that. It was so nice to get a break from those contractions, whew. After that I went to sleep for a couple of hours & woke up around 6:30 am or so. My {new} nurse (they had changed shifts in the middle of the night) checked me & I was 9 cm! She called my Dr. who came in & told me that I'd probably start pushing in about an hour or two, so she told me to call my mom & sister, who were going to be in the room while I was pushing. I called them both & told them when to be at the hospital. By 7:30 am my sister had arrived, but my mother decided to go run an errand before coming to the hospital, lol. Just like my mom!! Ugh. Well by that time I could literally feel the baby's head on my pelvic bone. I told the nurse that I felt like her head was about to literally fall out of me, so she checked me & she was like "oh yeah, she's right there & your 10cm, 100% effaced!" So she called my Dr. & told me to do a practice push, which I did & she told me to stop & not to push anymore until my Dr. arrived. She said that the baby was right there & ready to come with just a few pushes. By the time my Dr. arrived my mom was STILL not there, so she asked if I wanted to wait for her. My sister had just called to see where she was & she said she was turning into the hospital campus, so I said that I didn't want to wait any longer. I figured by the time she got there the baby wouldn't be out anyways. After a few pushes {about 5 min.}, my mom finally arrived & by that time I had gotten the hang of pushing. I pushed for maybe 10 more minutes for 10 seconds each time & she slid right out @ 8:10 am! They laid her right on my tummy & the hubbs cut the umbilical cord. I cuddled her for a few seconds until they took her over to get cleaned up, measured, weighed, etc. She was so beautiful & cried right away! She got APGARs of 8 & then 9 & weighed in at 4 pounds 13 ounces & was 17.5 inches long. A teeny tiny little miracle - our sweet little baby girl!

And while they worked on her, my Dr. delivered the placenta, which I asked to see - [TMI ALERT] looked kinda like a redish purplish octopus, and sewed me up - I had a minor tear. The placenta was sorta gross & amazing all at the same time...my child had received everything she needed from me through that thing while growing away inside of me? The miracle of childbirth & God. Simply amazing.

After I got all cleaned up, my dad & little sister came by to visit & see the babe before I was moved to my post-partum room. And the Dennifers took our very first family picture with our newest edition {minus Dizz}:

And that's my birth story! Although she was small & technically pre-term, she was really healthy, but had a little trouble maintaining a normal body temp & she had some jaundice. Due to her bilirubin levels/jaundice, she had to stay in the hospital one additional day for photo-therapy, which was scary for me & made me sad, but was best for her in the end. And I think it looked much worse than it actually was - I think she liked the warm lights & she did excellent sleeping under them:

My poor baby! It looks worse than it was, she was pretty calm under the lamps (the nurse told me it was 85 degrees & comfy under the lights). It's just scary seeing your 3 day old baby with those "sunshades" on in that big incubator.

We are still adjusting to being parents & caring for a newborn is much more hectic than we both expected, but we are loving every minute of it! I promise my blog will be back to it's regularly scheduled programming soon, but for now I'll just post when I get a free second & free hand!

And for kicks, here are my final two sets of bump shots @ 35 & 36 weeks:

Hope you enjoyed my birth story! 'Till next time.

Baby J to do list update - 10.08.10

29. That's the number of days until Baby J's due date...you read that right, twenty nine! OMG, I can't believe how soon that is. I have totally been slacking on updating my Baby J to do list, but I have been continuing to tackle the items, so I figure better late than never, right?! I looked back through my posts & saw that the last time I updated this was on September 17th! Definitely time do another one...time is running short & we still have a lot left to do. Here are the latest updates:

House Related:

  • Buy new area rug for living room.
  • Find (or make) & install valance over sliding glass door (not so sure this one will get done - depends on how much the valance I like will cost).
  • Mop hardwoods in all areas.
  • Clean base boards throughout house.
  • Scrub walls where Dizz grease spots are --> LOL, yes my dog leaves grease marks in the areas where he always leans against the walls! What? Your dog doesn't?! Hahahaha. Who knows WTH is up with that..my dog is a weirdo - he gets bathed/groomed like every other month...promise!
  • Buy & have the hubbs put together Billy bookcase from Ikea in basement office area.
  • Clean out basement utility storage closet. -- I wish I took before & afters...my husband seriously did an AMAZING job cleaning out this area.
  • Buy iPod Clock/Radio for MB.
  • Find & buy *small* entertainment system for MB TV (this is a DH added to do, lol).
  • Do the fall decorating! -- post showing all of this year's fall decor sometime next week!
  • Steam clean Dizz grease spots where he lays on the carpet - just like on the walls for the stairs, if he lays in one spot a lot, the grease from his coat makes that spot on the carpet dirty...eww!
  • ADDED: Buy & install new storm door. -- Because of the specific one we wanted, we had to get it special ordered, so we did that last weekend & are now waiting on it to come in!

Baby J/Nursery Related:

Baby J Stuff (in no particular order)-

  • Take childbirth class - scheduled for September 26, 2010!
  • Buy a few nursing tanks, sports bras & lounge pants. -- I got a these nursing bras the other day from Motherhood Maternity:

I plan to use these along with sports bras I already have. I also picked up a couple pairs of lounge pants from Old Navy in one size larger than my pre-pregnancy size for comfort & will use those along with lounge pants I already own. I decided against nursing tops altogether & will just stick with the bras & comfy regular t-shirts &tank tops. I didn't want to buy a whole bunch of nursing wear when I'm not sure how long I'll nurse &/or not sure how long I'll wear the stuff even if I nurse for a long time.
  • Return any stuff we get duplicates of; freecycle/donate {hand-me-down} clothes we won't use.
  • ADDED: Buy any items not received as gifts that we will need immediately. -- Babies 'R Us has a pretty great sale this weekend, so I'll likely tackle this one today or tomorrow. We don't need much, mainly just the monitor, maybe a couple blankets (I surprisingly didn't get many as gifts, but my mom did give me several hand me down blankets) & several burp cloths (again, didn't get many as gifts, but I plan to buy two packs of the Gerber Cloth Diaper inserts & use those...I hear they are awesome to use as burp cloths).
  • Pack hospital bag. -- Yeah, ummm...I need to get on this one. Hoping to tackle it this weekend!
  • Install car seat in my SUV & get installation inspected.

Nursery Stuff -

  • Hang curtains (on hold until we get the hardware in early Oct. :o( ).
  • Put up remaining leaves/berries on tree & "blow" them around windows (also on hold until curtains are put up).
  • Hang framed "Beautiful" & "Miracle" [ReDeemed] Unique wall art (also on hold until curtains are put up).
  • Buy remaining frames for photo wall.
  • Wash all clothes & blankets; put away in drawers.-- I did one round of washing already, plan to do the rest this weekend.

Financial Related:
  • Make 529 (college savings) plan choice & get/read enrollment info. -- Read all the info - just need to make a final decision now.
  • Look into life insurance coverage & discuss/make any necessary adjustments.

M'wah Related:

  • Change name with electric company, school loans & long-term savings bank account (no, I still haven't done the name changes on a few accounts).
  • Finalize maternity leave plan, type it up & submit it to my supervisor & team leader; put leave requests in time tracking system.
  • Get hair cut & straightened before due date. LOL, for some reason I want my hair straight when the baby's born (it's more manageable that way than in its natural CURLY state), so if I have time, I'm gonna try & keep it straight for the few weeks leading up to my due date.
  • Pick out design for birth announcements (so that I can order them soon after she arrives); make address labels for envelopes.
  • ADDED: Write & send out all thank you notes. -- I got all of them done for the gifts from Baby J's first shower, now I need to write & send the ones for shower #2!
So that's my update, we have gotten a whole lot done & still have a decent amount of work to do! The good thing is most of the labor intensive & major stuff is out of the way. And, if you look closely at the nursery to do's, we are all D-O-N-E with the nursery, woooooot! I'm so excited to show it off - big reveal coming up on Tuesday (since Monday's a holiday)!!! Last day of work in the office - October 29 - only 21 days to go! And only 4 weeks left till Baby J's due date - please come on time little one, mommy & dad can't wait to meet you. Gotta run now so I can work on tackling some more of this list. I'll be back later this weekend or sometime next week with my 35-36 week pregnancy update, to show off my fall decor & of course, Tuesday's BIG reveal of the nursery! Hope everyone has a wonderful Columbus Day weekend!! 'Till next time!

Update, maternity tour & baby shower #1!

Hi there everyone! I.am.SO.happy.right.now. The end of the our busiest season at work was today, so even though it was my day off - I went in to finish up some last minute stuff. I worked SOOOO much overtime this week, it's insane, so I am really looking forward to coasting the rest of the way through the time until I go out on maternity leave, lol. The good news is, all the extra time I worked, I am getting compensatory time off so that's extra hours that I don't have to telework or use leave without pay during maternity leave. I am taking 12 weeks off, but only have just a little over 11 weeks of paid sick & annual, so with all the extra hours I worked during the month of September, I should have an additional 2-3 days of comp time, woot. But I am literally exhausted...so tonight, I'm looking forward to curling up on the couch & catching up on all my DVR'ed shows that I missed during all the fall premieres this week! So anywho, sorry for my lack of posts (& comments on all of your blogs) recently, but I'm back & my life will now return to normal - that is until the little one gets here, which is actually pretty soon! And I promise that I will be posting my fall decor inspiration this weekend or early next week & also show you what I have done so far! Today, I want to catch up & tell everyone about our hospital maternity tour & Baby J's Shower #1 thrown by the hubby's family!

So our hospital tour was last Thursday, September 16th. I had, of course, worked late & so did the hubbs, so we actually were kinda close to missing it! However, we did make it in time - even a few minutes early & I was able to turn in my hospital pre-registration paperwork, so that's DONE! Our tour guide was awesome - she started out showing us where to go when we arrived at the hospital, then we went up to labor & delivery. We walked through & she showed us the family waiting area, which is nice with TVs, vending & toys for kiddos. She told us about the hospital's security procedures - as soon as the baby is born, me, the hubbs & the babe get the same ID bracelet & the staff will not allow anyone to take the baby from the nursery or make decisions about her care without them checking the bracelets first; they also put a "baby low jack" (lol) on the baby's umbilical cord & it sets off an alarm anytime someone takes the baby near a stairwell. I think that's it, but there may have been more. Then she showed us what we were all waiting to see - the labor, delivery & recovery rooms, which are all private with private bathrooms & really nice & so spacious. Only 4 people are allowed in the rooms with the mom at any given time & she told us all the procedures/rules. Finally, we stopped by the recovery rooms, which are also private, but not as spacious. The good news is, they have free Wi Fi, TVs with cable & free "room service" meals for the hubbs & I. We finished the tour looking at the nursery & the babies in there - they were all so cute! I LOVED the tour & am so happy we made it...makes me even more excited to be there & bring our baby girl into the world!

Now on to our baby shower! It was held on Saturday, September 18th & was in the hubb's hometown (at his cousin's beautiful home), which is about 3-3.5 hours away from where we live. I was expecting something small & laid back, no games or favors, homemade food & a homemade cake since it was supposed to be just the hubby's family & a few of his mom's friends. Well this was not at all how it was, it was SO nice with decorations & games & favors & a professionally made {yummy} cake & lots of family & friends! I was so overwhelmed to see everything his mom had put together for us... she loves her granddaughter! Here are some pics from our awesome shower #1:

The hubbs & I when we arrived:

Us & MIL, who hosted the shower:

The cute cake & favors:

Games:
LOL, we forced the guys to play - the hubbs won!!

Opening gifts:
That's the "man"/mini diaper bag!

Cutting the cake:

And all the cute stuff when we got home:

We got lots of great stuff including her bouncer, her activity/tummy time mat, a cute piggy bank, some bottle cleaning & other accessories, a baby vaporizer, a "man"/mini diaper bag for the hubbs, first aid kit & of course, some cute clothes, adorable FUggs (faux Uggs) & a cuddly blanket! We were planning to stay down there, but Dennis wanted to head home, so we did & got home around 2am! We passed out that night, but on Sunday, I went through everything, organized stuff & decided what we needed to return/exchange - there's not much, so that's great!

Whew, I guess that's enough for today..I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. And I promise I'll be back to my old posting/commenting frequency now that work has calmed down a bit! Right now my DVR & comfy couch are calling my name, hahaha. 'Till next time!

Baby J to do list update - 09.17.10

The weeks just keep flying by! This week at work has been crazy as usual, but I'm getting close to the end of my workload for the fiscal year, then I will just concentrate on clearing up any loose ends before I go out on maternity leave! Clearly this update is a little late this week, but I have been working like an insane person & not getting home till nearly 7PM during the week, so my time to blog has been reduced. After next week, hopefully my life will be back to normal - or mostly normal. :)

Now on to my list...we actually got a lot done over the past week or so, and I'm happy to say I think it'll all  get done (at least all of the REALLY important stuff) before our little girl arrives! I think I'm definitely slowing down, so it's making it hard for me to get too much done. My fall decor is definitely coming along, but I'm waiting on a shipment from Save on Crafts (GREAT discount online craft shop!) to finish up my DR centerpiece - hopefully it'll turn out good!

House Related:

  • Get gutters cleaned. -- I think we decided not to do this, we don't think it's necessary this year, so this one will be gone next list update.
  • Clean under the deck area; get rid of any debris in that area.
  • Buy new area rug for living room. -- We are now leaning towards having no area rug at all - wdyt? I'm kinda nervous to have nothing at all, but it is a pain because Dizzle's hair gets all over it & it can't be too light because he gets it dirty too with his body oil, lol. Sheesh - what a weirdo dog we have!
  • Find (or make) & install valance over sliding glass door (not so sure this one will get done - depends on how much the valance I like will cost).
  • Mop hardwoods in all areas.
  • Organize pantry.
  • Make room in kitchen cabinets for baby stuff.
  • Buy iPod Clock/Radio for MB.
  • Find & buy *small* entertainment system for MB TV (this is a DH added to do, lol).
  • Do the fall decorating!
  • Steam clean Dizz grease spots where he lays on the carpet - just like on the walls for the stairs, if he lays in one spot a lot, the grease from his coat makes that spot on the carpet dirty...eww!

Baby J/Nursery Related:

Baby J Stuff (in no particular order)-
  • Do hospital tour - Re-scheduled for September 16, 2010!
  • Take childbirth class - scheduled for September 26, 2010!
  • Pre-register with hospital.
  • Gather several recipes for frozen meals (to eat after baby gets here). -- Starting to think that I may not do this, so this will likely be off the list next week. I figure our freezer space is pretty limited as is & either the hubbs or I can take turns cooking meals & there's always take out!
  • Buy a few nursing tanks, sports bras & lounge pants.
  • Return any stuff we get duplicates of; freecycle/donate {hand-me-down} clothes we won't use.
  • Pack hospital bag.
  • Install car seat in my SUV & get installation inspected.
  • Cook freezer meals (between 35-37 weeks). -- See note above; this one will likely be removed next week.

Nursery Stuff -

  • Measure & put in drawer liners in dresser/changer combo. -- I just found some cute green striped contact paper liner from WalMart to use for the drawers. I have seen lots of people do the whole cutesy paper + Modge Podge, which I LOVE. But since her drawers are brand new, I didn't want to line them with something that involved the use of glue. Plus, this paper can just be easily pulled up & switched out if necessary. Here it is in her drawers:

  • Hang curtains (on hold until we get the hardware in early Oct. :o( )
-- I ordered most of them, I just need to select & order her first year frame!
  • Wash all clothes & blankets; put away in drawers.

Financial Related:
  • Make 529 (college savings) plan choice & get/read enrollment info. -- Read all the info - just need to make a final decision now.
  • Look into life insurance coverage & discuss/make any necessary adjustments.
  • Find out process for changing over health & dental insurance for the baby & I to the hubb's policy - we both work for the Federal Government & it was cheaper to have separate insurance until we had a little one, then switch to the family coverage.

M'wah Related:

  • Change name with electric company, school loans & long-term savings bank account (no, I still haven't done the name changes on a few accounts).
  • Get physical done at PCP.
So that's it for this week! We are definitely making progress & most of the major stuff is done! Our baby shower #1 is tomorrow afternoon & I'm so excited! My main baby shower is in two weeks! I remember when they were both scheduled, I thought we had soooo long till they got here, now they are both just around the corner, woot! I heart cute baby stuff, so I'm excited to see what all of our friends & family give to Baby J! Gotta run now so I can start packing & I need to get my nails/eyebrows done too. I'll be back after this weekend with my 33 week pregnancy update, shower pics & update on the maternity tour we did last night! And I still owe you guys my fall decor inspirations - I should maybe get that up before I finish the fall decor, huh?! Hahaha. 'Till next time!

Baby J to do list update - 09.08.10

The weeks just keep flying by! I had a GREAT long weekend, we went to the VA Tech vs. Boise State season opener game on Monday & had a blast! Makes me wish I went to a big football school (we {George Mason University} are a basketball school), but since I'm from VA, I routed for VA Tech ::wink::. Unfortunately, they lost in the last minute of the game, boo. I definitely want to go to more college games soon - that was a blast.

Now on to my list...we got less done this week than in the past couple of weeks, but it's still coming along! I think I'm definitely slowing down, so it's making it hard for me to get too much done. I have been working on my fall decor a lot over the past week, but like I said in my last list update, I don't want to cross stuff off my list until it's completely finished - that way I'm not cheating. ;)

House Related:

  • Get gutters cleaned.
  • Clean under the deck area; get rid of any debris in that area.
  • Buy new area rug for living room. -- We went to 3 different stores looking for a new rug this weekend, no luck. So I'm going to start scouring the internet this week.
  • Clean out front closet. -- Last week I mentioned wanting to get a cheap basket to put my winter scarves & gloves in. Instead of buying one, I just re-purposed a basket I had hanging out in my {in transition} craft/desk area in the basement.
  • Find (or make) & install valance over sliding glass door (not so sure this one will get done - depends on how much the valance I like will cost).
  • Mop hardwoods in all areas.
  • Organize pantry.
  • Make room in kitchen cabinets for baby stuff
  • Clean base boards throughout house.
  • Scrub walls where Dizz grease spots are --> LOL, yes my dog leaves grease marks in the areas where he always leans against the walls! What? Your dog doesn't?! Hahahaha. Who knows WTH is up with that..my dog is a weirdo - he gets bathed/groomed like every other month...promise!

  • Do the fall decorating!
  • Steam clean Dizz grease spots where he lays on the carpet - just like on the walls for the stairs, if he lays in one spot a lot, the grease from his coat makes that spot on the carpet dirty...eww!
  • ADDED: Install new toilet seat cover on powder room toilet. -- Our old one was damaged on the hinges for a while & then it came clear off during my birthday BBQ bash from all those people putting it up & down!

Baby J/Nursery Related:

Baby J Stuff (in no particular order)-
  • Buy onesie from our alma mater - she MUST have one since her daddy & I went to the same school...it's where we met!
  • Make appointment to meet with pediatrician & tour office.
  • Do hospital tour - Re-scheduled for September 16, 2010!
  • Take childbirth class - scheduled for September 26, 2010!
  • Pre-register with hospital. -- got the paperwork from my Dr. & I have filled it out & will turn it in during the hospital tour on September 16th.
  • Gather several recipes for frozen meals (to eat after baby gets here).
  • Buy a few nursing tanks, sports bras & lounge pants.
  • Return any stuff we get duplicates of; freecycle/donate {hand-me-down} clothes we won't use.

  • Hang framed "Beautiful" & "Miracle" [ReDeemed] Unique wall art (also on hold until curtains are put up).
  • Buy remaining frames for photo wall.
  • Buy TV for bookshelf - yes, we are putting a TV in the baby's room...it's more for us than the baby & we decided we wanted one in there for late night sessions with the babe. -- I think we decided to wait on buying the TV until Black Friday (to get a better deal), so next week I'll remove this item since it's not going to be done before the babe gets here.

-- The hubbs called his HR representative today to ask about this & is awaiting a response from her.

M'wah Related:

  • Change name with electric company, school loans & long-term savings bank account (no, I still haven't done the name changes on a few accounts).
  • Get physical done at PCP.
  • Finalize maternity leave plan, type it up & submit it to my supervisor & team leader; put leave requests in time tracking system.

  • Pick out design for birth announcements (so that I can order them soon after she arrives); make address labels for envelopes.

So we got five items fully completed & I have started on several others. Overall, I think we are still on track to get most, if not all, of the list completed! I will try to post this week's pregnancy update, the Project Nursery bedding selection & my fall decor plans this week, but my stupid work computer is infected or something, so our IT people took it & I need to get a  loaner until mine is all better. The problem with that is that it takes FOREVER to get a freaking loaner, which means I may have to go in this weekend & get some work done because I have done absolutely NOTHING due to my computer issues. Boooooo to computer viruses. They suck. On the plus side - the hubbs is going out of town on Saturday, so I don't really have anything to do anyways AND I get comp time that I can use during my maternity leave, woot! So hopefully I'll be back with all those updates soon! 'Till next time!

Baby J to do list update - 09.01.10

Wowza, the last week went by sooo quickly! I think I got a decent amount done on my list over the past week, but I still clearly have lots left to do, so it's time to get my booty into gear. A lot of stuff has been partially done, so in the spirit of not faking myself out, no item will get crossed off unless it is completely done. So here are this week's updates:

House Related:

  • Get gutters cleaned.
  • Clean under the deck area; get rid of any debris in that area.
  • Buy new area rug for living room.
  • Buy new throw blanket for couches. -- I had a 10% off PB coupon + the throw I had been lusting over was on sale, so I ordered it:

The PB Essential throw - omg, doesn't it just look so cuddly & soft?! I can wait to curl up on the couch with my baby girl, my hubby & this throw. :) I got it in Dark Ivory & I think I'll pair it up nicely with the knock off brown buttoned PBK pillows & these pretty & rich orange pillows that I already own from Target!

  • Clean out front closet. -- Got started on this, but I think I need to get a cheap basket or something to organize the stuff on the top shelf.
  • Clean out & magazine & odds & ends baskets in LR.
  • Find (or make) & install valance over sliding glass door {not so sure this one will get done - depends on how much the valance I like will cost}.
  • Mop hardwoods in all areas.
  • Organize pantry.

So that's it for this week - I'm making some headway, but still have lots to get done. I am still on track with my goal of getting 3-5 items marked off the list each week. This weekend coming up is a long one, so I'm hoping to get a lot of the house stuff done. Clearly I need to work on the "me" list a little more too! What about all of you - are any of you working on some sort of running to do list? How'd you do over the past week? Tomorrow I will be doing another Project Nursery post on my lamp makeover - it came out pretty darn cute thanks to some help from my favorite tool - the hubbs ::wink::. 'Till next time!

Baby J to do list update - 08.26.10

I had originally planned on doing this update yesterday & every Wednesday after that until the baby arrives or until I finish this list off...whichever comes first (preferably finishing the list up)! But I was SO busy yesterday running around, that I did not get a chance to do it, so I'm posting it now! Know you will think I am insane, but I have added just a few things from last week, BUT I also got a bunch of stuff crossed off too! The plan is to show completed items with a strikethrough line over them as they are completed & then not show them on the following week's list, that way you easily can see everything I accomplished each week. So, here goes - this week's updates:

  • Find (or make) & install valance over sliding glass door {not so sure this one will get done - depends on how much the valance I like will cost}.

  • Find out process for changing over health & dental insurance for the baby & I to the hubb's policy - we both work for the Federal Government & it was cheaper to have separate insurance until we had a little one, then switch to the family coverage.

  • Get filling in tooth where brackets previously were (I got a cavity from when I had braces & the bracket was...boo). -- Went to the dentist yesterday & found out that I actually need a freakin' crown! This is now going to wait until after Baby J arrives. In the mean time, they put a build up material to maintain the existing tooth.
  • Order Thank You notes for shower gifts.
So those are my updates - I am on track with my original goal of getting 3-5 items done a week, woot! Wish me luck this weekend tackling some more of the list. Tonight/tomorrow I'll be posting my 29 week update in addition to 5QF!! 'Till next time!
